Respiration is the movement of oxygen from outside air to cells within tissues, and the transport of carbon dioxide in the opposite direction. Oxygen is used by the organism's cells, while carbon dioxide is transported out as a waste product.
Organisms in the different phyla all have their own unique methods of respiration- from diffusion to gills to lungs. However, there are striking similarities in the respiration of some of these organisms, such as annelida and nematoda, that indicate close evolutionary relationships. Important Terms
